Celebrating Lady Harrison’s Legacy & NMPFA’s 60-Year Story

A Field of Opportunity (1965)

In 1965, Lady Harrison generously donated her field—just over 8.5 acres—on Guisborough Road, Nunthorpe, for use by the residents of the nearby parishes of Nunthorpe, Marton, and Ormesby. This historic conveyance laid the foundation for what would become the Nunthorpe & Marton Playing Fields Association, established the same year as a registered charitable trust.

From Polo to Play

Interestingly, that very land had previously served as a polo field, with ponies historically brought in via Nunthorpe Station—a nod to the area’s sporting past before becoming a hub for the community.

The Role of  Kirkland Hinton

A special committee chaired by Mr Kirkland Hinton was instrumental in shaping the vision for the field’s future. He championed the idea of creating facilities for multiple sports—including football, cricket, tennis, hockey, and archery—ensuring that Lady Harrison’s gift would benefit the broader community.

The 60th Anniversary Mural Unveiling

On 25 August 2025, NMPFA marked its 60th anniversary in style with a vibrant community celebration. The weather was extremely welcoming and the day brought together sports sections, local businesses, families, fairground rides, garden-fete games and abundant community spirit.

• The highlight? A brand-new mural unveiled at the celebration, lovingly designed by award-winning artist Kate Claxton-Design. This beautiful work blends the iconic outline of Roseberry Topping with the many sports played at the fields – including football, rackets, athletics, quoits – and showcases the importance of the recreation club.

• The mural was officially unveiled by the Mayor of Middlesbrough, Chris Cooke, underscoring NMPFA’s vital place in South Middlesbrough life.
